What happened on Shab e Barat and what is its history?
The history of Shab-e-Barat on the night of 15th Sha’ban begins from the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) which was narrated by Hazrat Ayesha (RA) in this tradition.
“The 15th night of Sha’ban was my night and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, was with me. When midnight came, I could not find him. Then the pride that grips women took hold of me and I put on my cloak and began to look for him in the rooms of his wives. I did not find him and returned to my room where I suddenly found him dropping a piece of cloth and saying in prostration:
My body and shadow bow down to you, my heart believes in you. These are my hands and I have committed no crime against myself with them. O Ghalib, from whom help is hoped for in every work. O Mighty One, forgive the great sin. My face bows down to the One who created it and created its hearing and sight.

Then he raised his head and then returned to prostration and said:
I seek refuge in You from Your displeasure with Your pleasure, seek refuge in Your forgiveness from Your punishment and seek refuge in You from Your Self, so it is as if You praise Yourself. I say as my brother Dawud (peace be upon him) said: I put my face in the dust for my master, every right for Him is that He is prostrated to.
Then he raised his head and said:
“O Allah, grant me a pious heart that is free from evil, neither hard nor evil.”
Then he turned and got into the blanket with me, and I was breathing heavily. He said:
What are these breaths coming, O Humira?
I told him, and he put his hands on my knees and said:
“How sad what those two knees had to endure that night.” This night is the 15th night of Sha’ban, in which Allah Almighty descends from the sky to the world and forgives His servants except the polytheists and those who hold grudges.
In short, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) explained the extra significance of this night by his own actions. Nothing special happened that night. Rather, Allah bestows a special status on whatever night He wills. It is His way of giving opportunities to His servants to approach Him and seek His pleasure.
