The caretaker government has slashed of all brands of banaspati ghee and oil prices at utility stores of Pakistan, to provide relief to inflation-weary people who are paying record high prices for food and fuel.
In a major development, the price of popular ghee brands has been reduced by Rs 60 to Rs 394 per kg. Earlier, ghee was available at Rs 455, with prices of lesser-known brands hovering at record highs.
Similarly, the prices of cooking oil have also been reduced despite the high inflation in the crisis-hit country.
Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Monday that consumer price index (CPI) inflation rose to 31.4 percent during September 2023 compared to the same month last year.
According to the PBS data, the inflation increased to 27.4 percent during the last month (August) while it was recorded at 23.2 percent during September 2022.
On a month-on-month basis, inflation rose to 2.0 percent in September 2023 from 1.7 percent in the previous month and declined to 1.2 percent in September 2022.

The Finance Minister said that the price of second grade ghee is Rs 20 per kg less than the market price. Tier 1 ghee at utility stores is Rs 8 to Rs 35 per kg cheaper than the market. Tier one cooking oil is Rs 40 to 78 cheaper than the market.
Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said that reduction in prices of ghee and edible oil at utility stores will be implemented immediately.
Utility Stores Corporation has increased the Ghee Price In Pakistan today by Rs 115 per kg today.
According to the notification issued by Utility Stores Corporation, the price of subsidized ghee has been increased by Rs 115 per KG. The price has been increased from Rs 375 to Rs 490 per kg today.
The beneficiaries of Benazir Income Sport Program will be exempted from the increase, the price of ghee per kg for them will remain Rs 300 per kg.
