Significance of Baisakhi

History of Baisakhi Festival
For Sikhs, it is the first day of the month of Vaisakh as well as the beginning of the Sikh New Year. It is also said that due to the persecution and execution of his father Guru Tegh Bahadur by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam, Guru Gobind Singh formed the Khalsa on the day of Vaisakhi. It was also Baisakhi Day when General Reginald Dyer, an official of the British colonial empire, opened fire on the assembled Indians at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, Punjab. It was a major event that sparked a major surge in the fight against British rule in India.
