Shab E Meraj History

The Night Journey, also known as Shab e Meraj, Isra’, and Mi’raj or Al-Israa wal Mi’raj, is celebrated on the 27th of the Holy month of Rajab (the seventh month of the Islamic calendar). The literal translation of Shab Miraj is Night of Ascension.

This event is celebrated on the night when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ascended to heaven from Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. A great gift of that night was that Faraz Salah (obligatory prayer) was established on Muslims. Like other events and occasions in the blessed life of our Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W), the night journey is a rich source of inspiration and lessons for all humanity.

This miraculous journey of ascension took place in two parts. First, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) traveled from Makkah (Kaaba) to Bayt al-Maqdis (Masjid al-Aqsa) and then ascended to heaven by the command of Allah.

The night began with the presence of the chief of all angels, Hazrat Gabriel (peace be upon him), in the presence of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then he took Muhammad from Masjid al-Haram (Kaaba) to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. This part of the Prophet’s journey is described in the Holy Qur’an:

“Glory be to Him who took His servant by night from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa, in the vicinity of which We have placed blessings, to show him Our signs. Indeed, He is Hearer, Seer.” (Surat al-Israa 1:17)

The mode of transportation used for this journey in the middle of the night was a horse-like animal called al-Baraq which was sent by Allah from Jannah (Paradise). After riding this celestial ride, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) reached Masjid al-Aqsa from Masjid al-Haram in just one second.

On reaching Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) found that all the prophets who had come before him were present there. These prophets include Abraham (AS), Isra (AS), Musa (AS) and all other prophets. Here Muhammad (peace be upon him) prayed two rak’ahs of all the prophets.

After that, two bowls were brought to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). One cup was filled with wine and the other with milk. He looked at them and chose milk. Gabriel (peace be upon him) said to him:

Praise be to Allah who guided you to Fitrah (purity and innocence). If you chose alcohol, your Ummah would have gone astray. (An-Nisa: 5657)
