It is the first medical college in the public sector to be established in Pakistan’s capital city. The College was initially awarded recognition for MBBS degrees for only 50 seats after inspection by the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PM&DC) on 28th March 2011. However, the award was later enhanced to 100 seats when the PMDC rules and regulations were completed adequately after relocation to the N.I.H. Islamabad’s Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) is the College’s parent institution.

Federal Medical & Dental College’s (FM&DC) new campus was inaugurated on 27th February 2012 by the Prime Minister of that time.
