According to the country’s Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980, banks across Pakistan will remain closed next week for the annual deduction of Zakat on the first day of Ramadan 2026, subject to the sighting of the moon.
Nisab is the minimum amount of net wealth that a Muslim must have to be eligible to pay Zakat, which is equivalent to 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) of gold and 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver, respectively.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is expected to soon issue formal instructions to all commercial banks regarding the process of Zakat deduction for 2026. Under the prevailing system, banks deduct Zakat from savings accounts, profit and loss sharing (PLS) accounts, and other similar deposit accounts that meet the prescribed eligibility criteria.
According to banking sources, the deduction will be calculated and made strictly in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Security. While the ministry is yet to officially announce the syllabus limit for the current year, its latest figures are expected to be released in the coming days.

Last year, the mandatory Zakat deduction threshold was set at Rs 179,689. Under this threshold, no Zakat will be deducted at source if the balance in an eligible account is less than a specified amount on the first day of Ramadan. Only accounts with a credit balance equal to or greater than the notified threshold are subject to automatic Zakat deduction.
